The new accusations relate to the alleged torture of US citizens held in Venezuela while Maduro was in power.

Prosecutors in the United States have accused Venezuela’s former leader Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, of conspiracy to commit torture.

One of the alleged purposes of such actions, prosecutors said, was "to repress and punish political opposition, silence dissent and perceived dissent, preserve and protect the power and authority of the members of the conspiracy"
